Why You Should Consider Borders

Opportunity to Share Your Experience
The nature of our business promotes customer service and personal interaction. Borders embraces its role as a vital, contributing member of the community that reaches out to connect with people. Mature workers have the opportunity to develop relationships with their peers from their local community in a friendly and fun store environment every time they come to work.

Health and Welfare Coverage
Mature employees who choose to work part-time can feel secure in knowing that they, too, have access to health care benefits (medical/Rx and/or dental/vision coverage) working as little as one day a week. In addition, full-time employees are provided with short-term disability coverage and can opt to participate in strengthened long-term disability and/or long-term care programs.

Flexibility in Scheduling
By enabling employees to work full-time or part-time, seasonally, mature workers can customize a schedule that works for them personally while supporting the needs of our business.

Generous Paid Time-off Policies
Full-time employees are eligible to receive paid time off for holidays, personal time, and vacation time.

Financial Benefits
Employees are eligible to participate in the Borders Group, Inc. Savings Plan by working 500 hours in the first six months of employment or 1,000 hours within any anniversary year. Employees over the age of 50 can participate in 401(k) "catch-up" contributions in an effort to save toward their retirement goals. Additionally, eligible employees can utilize the Merrill Lynch "Advice Access" service for no-cost investment advice related to 401(k).

Intellectual Stimulation
Employees work in an environment surrounded by products that reflect the Borders brand personality—engaging, spirited, inspiring, and sincere. Borders celebrates the universal desire to explore and find personal enrichment and knowledge. Employees have personal access to our products through a robust employee discount program, free products, and a retiree discount policy that provides a lifetime discount to all employees who are 55 and retire after 10-plus years of service with the company.

Testimonials
Borders Team Member

Carol Yates, Borders Superstore #653 in Toledo, Ohio
"As a mature worker at Borders, I am able to continue the type of work I did for 32 years with the Toledo city schools. I managed and trained the staff of six elementary school libraries, and I was able to buy books that helped students build a love for reading.

At Borders, I work in the Children's department, where I continue to help parents and their children build a love for books. I also do the weekly story time, my toddlers call me 'Grandma Carol.' It is difficult to express how blessed I feel having a job I love doing."

Borders Team Member Larry Wrona, Inventory Processing Team, Borders #19 in Novi, Mich.
"There are many things I like about being a mature worker at Borders. First and foremost are the excellent health care benefits and flexible work hours. Full-time employees also get great paid time off benefits.

Our knowledge and experience is appreciated. We remember and know more about the books, music, and films of the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. We actually experienced them and can place them in a historical context, and can recommend them to customers.

At the same time, working at Borders keeps me up to date on pop culture, not only with the product we sell, but also in the younger employees in the store. It's great that I am able to talk about current culture with employees 30 years younger than me and recommend older titles that connect to what they are reading and listening to."

Borders in the Media: Borders Attracts Older Workers

As the first wave of the 83 million individuals that comprise the Baby Boomer generation (1946-1964) enter their sixties, companies are beginning to realize the importance of attracting and retaining older workers. According to the AARP, many Baby Boomers are looking to remain actively employed—70% plan to work at least part-time during "retirement years" and close to 50% plan on working into their seventies. Several recent news stories have featured Borders' approach to attracting older workers, including the New York Times, Boston Globe, and Business Management.
